This site shares general information and an idea we are researching. It is not legal, electrical, financial or other professional advice, it does not promise any savings or outcome, and it is not connected to any utility, government agency or company it mentions.
1. General information only
Everything here is general public education. It is not legal advice, and it does not create an attorney-client relationship with anyone. This site is not a law firm and does not offer legal services. Reading it, joining a list, or contacting us does not make anyone your lawyer.
The law in this area is new and some key questions are unresolved, including how SB 868 (which addresses utility interconnection) interacts with California Civil Code section 714 and with a particular lease or landlord. Your lease, your building, and your facts matter. Talk to a licensed attorney in your situation before you act on anything you read here.
2. Not electrical, safety, tax or financial advice
Nothing here is engineering, electrical, building-code, insurance, tax or financial advice. Electrical equipment can be dangerous if it is uncertified, damaged, or installed or used incorrectly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, your local codes and any rules that apply to your building, and use a licensed professional where one is required. We do not inspect, test, certify or approve any product or installation.
3. Savings and numbers are estimates
Figures on this site about cost, output, savings and payback come from third-party sources, are linked where we use them, and are estimates or past examples. They are not predictions or promises for you. Real results depend on shade, orientation, equipment, how much power you use in the daytime, your utility rate and plan, and many other things. Currency amounts and conversions are approximate.
4. We are researching an idea, not selling a service
We are exploring whether a service that helps renters and property owners reach agreement on plug-in solar can be built. No such service is operating, nothing here is an offer, and we make no promise that one will launch, that any landlord will agree to anything, or that any renter will be able to install or keep a system.
5. No affiliation or endorsement
This site is run by San Diego Plug-In Solar Cooperative, Inc., a California worker cooperative corporation (“the cooperative,” “we” or “us”). We are independent. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by San Diego Gas & Electric, the City of San Diego, the State of California, any legislator or agency, or any manufacturer, retailer, installer, publisher or organization named on this site. Names and trademarks belong to their owners and appear only to identify things or to credit sources. Mentioning a product, company or standard is not a recommendation to buy or use it.
6. Third-party content, links, quotes and photos
We link to outside sources and quote short passages with attribution. We do not control those sites or the accuracy of what they say, and a link is not an endorsement of everything on the page. Quotes belong to the people and publishers who gave them. Photographs are used under the licenses listed in the Photo credits at the bottom of every page, and some require the credit shown there. Where a photo shows a place, the location is stated on the photo. Photos of balcony systems in other countries are examples of the technology and do not mean the same equipment or arrangement is legal, safe or permitted in your home.
7. Accuracy, updates and accessibility
We try to be accurate and note when information was last reviewed, but laws, utility rules, product certifications and prices change quickly and we may make mistakes or miss updates. Check the primary sources, such as the enacted bill text, before relying on anything. We aim to make this site usable by everyone; see our accessibility statement. If you spot an error or a barrier, please email us at hello@sdpluginsolar.com.
8. Sign-ups and your information
Our surveys collect the answers you choose to give, and we save them privately; our privacy policy explains what we collect and how to ask us to delete it. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and we use it only to follow up about this project. Please do not use the surveys or email to describe a dispute, and do not send lease documents, account numbers, health information or other sensitive details. Like most websites, our host and any plugins may log basic technical data such as IP address and browser type.
9. No warranties and limited liability
This site is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent the law allows, the cooperative and its members, directors and contributors are not liable for any loss, damage, cost or claim arising from your use of, or reliance on, this site or anything linked from it, including any dispute with a landlord, property manager, utility, installer or seller. Some places do not allow certain limits on liability, so parts of this paragraph may not apply to you. Nothing here limits any right you have under law that cannot be waived.
10. Copyright and trademarks
The original text, design and layout of this site are © 2026 San Diego Plug-In Solar Cooperative, Inc. All rights reserved. This does not cover third-party material: photographs are used under the licenses listed in the Photo credits at the bottom of every page, and quotes, linked articles and data belong to their authors and publishers. “San Diego Plug-In Solar” and the sun logo are claimed as trademarks (™) of San Diego Plug-In Solar Cooperative, Inc. They are not registered. You are welcome to link to this site and to quote short excerpts with attribution. For any other use, please ask first.
11. Governing law and changes
Your use of this site is governed by the laws of the State of California, and any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts located in San Diego County, California. We may update this page at any time, and the date at the top shows when it last changed.
